eNframe

Folly Competition

eNframe is a proposal for the 2017 Folly competition based in the Socrates Sculpture Park. In response to the theme of fusing form with utility, eNframe is a frame and infill kit of parts system that can create a large variety of different configurations of tents. This lightweight system can be flipped, rotated, multiplied, connected and panels inserted at any and all sides, which gives the assembler(s) freedom to create a configuration that is uniquely designed for the aesthetic and functional desire. The parts can be transported by 1-2 people, and when built, heavy enough to withstand weather conditions. The frame and infill structure provides a minimal backdrop for the lively activity that occurs at Socrates Sculpture Park, while creating a distinctive architectural language across the landscape.

The frame consists of 4 aluminum angles configured in an X cross section. 2 formal types are provided; one (A), an orthogonal cubic frame, and the other (B), an angled frame. With 3 possible combinations (A+A, A+B, B+B), there are 9 different configurations from simply flipping the frame, giving the assembler freedom of aesthetic preference as well as dynamic combinations if all 4 tents were to be erected at once. The 2’x8’ panels, predominately made of a honeycomb polycarbonate and more minimally, perforated aluminum, serve as roofs for shade and protection, barriers to accommodate displays and signage, and shelving to support objects on display.
The frames and panels can be stacked when in storage, and one would only need an allen wrench and the necessary amount of flat head bolts. When assembling, one could connect the frames on its “side” using an aluminum frame connector, insert the necessary panels, and then flip it to its desired orientation. The flexibility of tent combinations allows for a variety of uses, ranging from markets to information booths to assembly spaces.
